We, a team of sport researchers from the University of Birmingham, would like to invite you to take part in a research study. Before you decide if you would like to take part you need to understand what the study is about and what you will be asked to do. Please take time to read the following information carefully.
The aim of the study is to find out about pupils’ experience in PE at school and how that impacts upon their motivation and a number of outcomes associated with taking part in leisure-time physical activity. It is hoped that the information collected will help us to understand how PE teaching environments influence pupils’ motivation and leisure-time physical activity, and how these environments impact upon pupils’ general thoughts and feelings.
If you choose to take part, you will fill in a questionnaire on the next webpages. The questionnaire will take approximately 30-45 minutes to complete. The questionnaire will ask you about the teaching in PE, your motivation and how you engage in PE, your physical activity outside of school and your well-being.
For you to take part in the research we must have your consent. If you would like to take part please complete the questionnaire on the next webpages. By agreeing to take part in the research you are agreeing that your answers can be used for science and possibly published in a scientific journal, but your name will not be used against anything you say. It is your choice if you want to take part. You are free to drop out from the project at any point up to one month after completing the questionnaire. If you would like to drop out from the project we ask that you (or your parent) write to us using the contact details below. The data you provide will be stored securely on an online, protected server and will not be seen by your PE teacher or school.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Dr Paul Appleton whose details can be found below. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter.
